Darryn Binder (Petronas Sprinta Honda) in his crash on Friday – nevertheless the brother of MotoGP rider Brad from South Africa managed the second-best time in the end and should be as good as qualified for Q2. Anyone who has not yet made it is his teammate John McPhee in fifteenth on Friday.

Live blog from the MotoGP Qualifying-Saturday in Barcelona

After a Friday with various surprises, it is now about the starting grid in the different classes. For some of the drivers who failed to meet their expectations on the first day, this is about the last chance to qualify directly for Q2. With Enea Bastianini, a rookie has finally made the established starts look very old, from the reigning to multiple MotoGP world champions. In addition, Pol Espargaró’s good result in front of Nakagami as the best Honda driver proved that the recurring claim about the allegedly problematic Honda RC213V can be dismissed as an old wives’ tale. Just because countless journalists and commentators keep repeating it doesn’t make it come true. Miguel Oliveira on the KTM and Suzuki rider Joan Mir, clearly behind the Honda duo as a podium driver in Mugello, provided proof of this. Below is the result from FP2 on Friday with evidence of it. In italics, the drivers who still have to improve on Saturday morning to move directly into Q2.

FP3 of MotoGP

The drivers are on the track and there have not been any changes in position compared to FP2 on Friday. A little later, Joan Mir and Miguel Oliveira made it into the top ten at the expense of Aleix and Pol Espargaró and currently the two asparagus brothers have to go into Q1. The Portuguese is right in front of KTM team-mate Binder on combined P4 and Mir is currently sixth behind. With 1’38.975 Quartararo just set the fastest time and is now leading in front of Zarco, Morbido and Oliveira. Now Vinales was on P4 and Nakagami is sixth, which means that the Japanese would also qualify for Q2 and Bagnaia has to tremble on P10. Rossi is behind in P11 in front of Miller, who has flown out of the top ten. I improved from 9 to 4, while Binder is now only ninth and, ahead of Bagnaia, one of the drivers who are under the most pressure in the top ten. The time has now run out, followed by the FP3 ranking list, with the drivers in italics who did not make it straight into Q2. Who still made it, is Johann Zarco with his best time in FP2, which combined Rossi is tenth and Miller has to go into Q1.

The third free practice of Moto2

The riders are on the track now. Fabio DI Giannantonio had a violent crash and then walked away on his knees in the gravel bed. It was a very high highsider on Turn 4. At Turn 10, Sam Lowes is now in the gravel bed, but he got up again immediately and shook his arms because he didn’t really understand the cause of his departure. It is to be expected that shortly before the end, like in MotoGP, the decision to move into Q2 has not yet been made. Lowes is in P4 and should have no problem staying in the first 14 despite the crash in order to be directly in Q2. Before him the two Fernandez and Bendsneyder. Most of the drivers are currently in the pits. Lorenzo Baldassari also fell shortly before “Di Gia” and is currently in the MV box while his bike is being repaired.
The last quarter of an hour in FP3
Joe Roberts is only on P19 and Beaubier on 24, the two US boys still have to improve if they want to go straight into Q2. Lüthi just finished on P14, but that shouldn’t be enough to be sure in Q2. The time has now expired and the following is the official ranking list with the drivers who have to go into Q1 in italics. Roberts, Arbolino, Dalla Porta and Ai Ogura also made it straight into Q2.

Qualifying of Moto3

The drivers are now on the track for Q1 and McPhee leads Garcia, Masia and Migno when the clock is still 9 minutes. In the last 5 minutes the decision will be made who will make it into Q2 and there will be 4 drivers who can fight for the top starting positions there. Xavi Artigas moved up to P2 behind the Scot, who was still in the lead, when there were still just under 2 minutes to go. Migno just crashed in the last minute, and he’ll definitely miss Q2. The time is up and then the top ten, of which the first 4 made it into Q2. World Championship leader Acosta is only eleventh and will have to start from the penultimate row on Sunday.

The Q2 of Moto3 with the 18 fastest from FP3 and Q1
The drivers are on the track and as usual they only have 15 minutes available, which means that a crash is as good as the end to try again. The first best time comes from Izan Quevara with 1’49.165. There are 9 minutes left on the clock and Alcoba is second ahead of Öncü, Salac and Binder. Toba is now the fastest, but there are still 7 minutes to drive and there will still be many changes in the front positions, which will be confirmed shortly afterwards when the Japanese is only on P6. Rodrigo ahead of McPhee, Masia and Antonelli is now the provisional order. In the last 3 minutes everything is still open, and some drivers are ready to drive out again. The time has run out, follow the ranking list with the starting grid.

Qualifying of MotoGP

As expected, Quartararo was fastest in FP4 ahead of Viñales, Oliveira, Zarco, Mir, Marc Marquez and Rossi. On the exit from the box, Marc Marquez plays the stalker again, and he clings to Miller. However, the former top star does not manage to benefit from it as hoped, which some commentators in our area have noted with satisfaction. It is embarrassing for the Repsol Honda driver and a little later Miller doesn’t catch a corner ideally and is rid of his shadow, maybe out of pure intent. In Q1, Lecuona is ahead of Martin, Pol, Miller and Marc at halftime. A little later Miller sets a provisional best time in Q1 with 1’39.553. Now the last attack follows on one of the two foremost places, which means moving into Q2. At the last stint,
Embarrassing and unsporting action by Marc Marquez – exactly like in Mugello
Marquez waits again for Miller, the man has absolutely no shame and many find his behavior embarrassing in the paddock and shake their heads. Lecuona fell violently on Turn 9, Q1 is over for him, and he should lose P2 in the last 2 minutes that are still on the clock. Nakagami is fastest in the last minute ahead of Miller, who now has one last chance to improve to be safe in Q2. Miller with his shadow Marquez and behind him Pol Espargaró is among the fastest and in the end it is the Australian in front of Pol and Marquez has brought his embarrassing action too little, he is only third! The “Stalker” is only 13th on the grid and his teammate and Miller complete Q2.

The Q2 with some French flags in the audience
Fabio Quartararo listens to some music in the headphones in the box and shortly afterwards, the crucial 15 minutes are all about the top 12 places on the starting grid. The sky is quite dark and on Sunday it is likely to rain until noon. With a good 10 minutes left on the clock, Valentino Rossi fell on Turn 4. Maybe it’s still enough for the old master, his teammate has the provisional best time shortly afterwards. But then Quartararo comes and literally pulverizes the previous record of his Yamaha brand colleague. Rossi is uninjured and was brought back to the pits on a scooter.
The decision in Q2
Fabio’s time is almost half a second faster than that of his rivals. Now the drivers go out again for their last time attack, there are still a little over 5 minutes on the clock. When there are still 3 minutes left to drive, 3 Yamahas with Morbido and Maverick lead behind Fabio. Rossi is on the go with the replacement bike and manages the eighth-fastest time, while Mir was on P3 shortly before that. But it’s not over yet, and Miller and Oliveira are now behind Quartararo. Shortly thereafter, Miller and then Pol crashed, resulting in yellow flags. The time has run out, and the ranking list will follow immediately. Rossi is 11th ahead of Pol Espargaró, which means row 4, along with Joan Mir. The other three Yamahas are on the first two rows. After position 12, the ranking means the rank of the riders in Q1.

The first interviews
Johann Zarco is very satisfied, but believes it could be difficult to push his compatriot Quartararo in the race. The Frenchman from Cannes would therefore already be quite happy with a podium, as he said on the record. Jack Miller was satisfied and initially did not comment on Q1, which will probably come in the official interview. In any case, the Australian hopes to finish the race ahead of Fabio. Of course, the pole sitter was also very satisfied, but didn’t see his best lap as perfect. But the most important thing for him is to be on the front row and thus to have a good starting position. Of course, he was also delighted by the encouragement of the relatively few fans on the track.

Qualifying of Moto2

The drivers are on the track for Q1 and in a little over 10 minutes we know which 4 will make it into the second qualifying. Jake Dixon fell and Q1 should have been over for the Englishman. With 2 minutes left on the clock, Navarro is in front of Di Giannantonio, Chantra and Bulega. The time has run out and the ranking list follows immediately with those who qualified for Q2 in places 1 to 4.

The Q2 of Moto2
The riders are on the track and a disappointed Tom Lüthi said in an interview that he had received a punishment for violating the track limit, but this was not justified. Although he triggered the sensors with his tire, he was still there within the route and the “forbidden area”. At halftime in Q2, Gardner leads ahead of Raul Fernandez, Chantra and Augusto Fernandez. Shortly after that, Bendsneyder set the second-best time and Lowes is currently in P5, when the clock is still a good 6 minutes. With 5 minutes left, Raul Fernandez is ahead of his teammate Gardner and the Dutchman. The time has now expired and the ranking of the last qualifying for the combustion engine categories follows immediately. Sam Lowes will only start from row 3 on Sunday. Schrötter as the penultimate in Q2 even two rows further back.

The first interviews
Bo Bendsneyder is very happy as third, and he expects a tough race on Sunday, especially for the rear tire. Raul Fernandez on P2 said it was very good, but the look on his face betrayed his disappointment. He’s a little concerned about whether his team-mate has a little better pace, but he’ll try everything to win. Of course, he reported with satisfaction after taking pole position. Remy Gardner is confident for Sunday and absolutely satisfied with first place on the grid. But he pointed out that the race would not take place until Sunday and that the most important thing would then be to be at the front at the end.

Circuito de Cataluña

The MotoGP Barcelona statistics from the last 6 years clearly show which riders, led by Fabio Quartararo, have the best record, which is a mortgage for Marc Marquez after the Catalan owed a lot since his comeback.
