Our photo of Circuito de Jerez with a view of turn 2 and in the background to the right of the first turn. On the left of the picture you can just see the “fate curve” of Repsol Honda drivers Mick Doohan and Marc Marquez. According to the racing doctors, however, he has been fit again since Portugal, so there should be no more excuses.

Day 1 starts with Moto3 FP1

This time the order is back to normal on race day, with Moto3 ahead of Moto2 and MotoGP. Nevertheless, the sequence is reversed in practice and qualifying for the weekend of the Spanish Grand Prix. As before in Portugal, the premier class drives on the first two days after Moto3. The reference times on the Circuito de Jerez for the individual classes are:
MotoGP: 1’36,584 for the lap record (Viñales, 2020) / 1’36,705 best poles (Quartararo, 2020).
Moto2: 1’41.109 for the lap record (Schrötter, 2020) / 1’41.182 best pole (Navarro, 2019).
Moto3: 1’45.165 for the lap record (Migno, 2020) / 1’45.410 best pole (Suzuki, 2020).

MotoGP FP1 – Binder on top

From the start, it was Aleix Espargaró who, not unexpectedly, caught the eye with the fastest time. With ten minutes to go, Quartararo is on P2 ahead of Zarco, Maverick, Morbido, Nakagami and Marc Marquez. When only a few minutes remain, Binder is the best KTM in 14th position and the Suzukis of Rins and Mir are in the midfield. KTM seems to have found part of their problem when Binder and Oliveira finish in the top ten just before the end. A little later, Marc Marquez followed suit with the second-best time to date. In the end, Binder set the fastest time ahead of Aleix and Marc Marquez, but that was only FP1. The positions become really important in the final minutes of the second free practice. The time has now expired and then the result of FP1.

Moto2 FP1: Gardner in front ahead of Bezzecchi and Lowes

English is spoken at the top after half-time. Remy Gardner leads in front of Joe Roberts, Raul Fernandez and Jorge Navarro. Meanwhile, Alex Lowes is in 6th position and Jake Dixon in 20th place. In the German-speaking countries, the picture is, as usual, with Schrötter on P12 and Lüthi only on 20. As the last 10 minutes began, Lowes was ahead of Gardner and Bezzecchi. Behind Canet, “Di Gia”, Roberts, Raul Fernandez and Navarro. A little later Vietti slipped in turn 2, but the Sky VR46 Italian did not injure himself. Shortly before the end, Sam Lowes is still in the gravel bed and a little later Aron Canet is also in the gravel bed instead of on the track. Nothing seems to have happened to either driver, even if Lowes was under his Kalex at first. The time of FP2 is up and Gardner was fastest, below the complete result of the second free practice.

FP2 of Moto3: Binder on P5 – McPhee only on P16

Darryn Binder started with a fall on Turn 2, but then apparently can drive back towards the pit on Service Road. The next rider with a crash is Niccolò Antonelli in Turn 1. With 25 minutes left on the clock, Tatsuki Suzuki is in the lead with 1’46.600 ahead of Migno and Rodrigo. When the last 5 minutes began, Rodrigo was leading in front of Antonelli, Acosta and Suzuki. Binder as 18th is still provisionally qualified for Q2 with his time from FP1, but shortly afterwards he drives the third-best time and should be safe in this regard. Shortly thereafter, Dupasquier set the second-best time, the Swiss finally seems to be among the top drivers. McPhee, on the other hand, is currently still on P16, while Suzuki is in the gravel shortly before the end. The following is the official result with the drivers who have not yet qualified for Q2 in italics.

The FP2 of MotoGP: Bagnaia ahead of Quartararo – Marc Marquez outside the top ten

At the beginning Quartararo was the fastest, until Aleix Espargaró topped his time and 30 minutes before the end Franco Morbidelli was also a tad faster. Unsurprisingly, the Yamaha riders look very strong here, although Valentino Rossi had held back in FP1. Usually this initially focuses on a good set-up for the race instead of chasing time. When the clock is still 26 minutes, the old master is at least on P13. At the beginning of the last quarter of an hour, Takaaki Nakagami was in second place behind Morbidelli and Tito Rabat was in the gravel. The Pramac Ducati substitute driver for Jorge Martin hadn’t injured himself and sprinted back to the pits on foot.
Showdown in FP2 – Preliminary decision about the provisional move into Q2
The last 10 minutes have begun and soon, with the final attack of most pilots, it will be a top ten time. Some changes are still to be expected, and it is quite possible that Stefan Bradl will not be able to maintain his fourth position after Aleix and in front of Quartararo, Vinales, Rins and Marc Marquez. Oliveira is the first to speak up with the third-best time. Then Quartararo struck and shortly after him Aleix Espargaró and a little later Bagnaia is at the top. Marc Marquez, like Rossi, did without a time attack and is not at the front, which still means little for on Saturday. The time has expired and below the official and unexpected result of FP2.

FP2 of Moto2 – the first 4 speak English

Just before the last half hour began, Cameron Beaubier fell. Fortunately, the American remains unharmed. A little later, Celestino Vietti crashes in turn 6, but can then climb again. After that, Tom Lüthi is also caught. The Swiss seem to have had a lot of trouble asserting themselves among the best since the beginning of the season. Alex Lowes was replaced at the top by Remy Gardner shortly before the end of FP2. Dixon and Roberts were also faster than the Englishman. In the last minute, Bezzecchi was the only non-English speaking pilot to make it into the top 5. Below is the ranking list of FP2 with the drivers in italics who have not made it directly into Q2 at the moment.
