Aegerter wins again – Odendaal loses P2 in the last lap to Bernardi
It was the Dane Jespersen who led as a surprising leader at the beginning, while pole sitter Dominique Aegerter was only in 4th position after the start. A little later, Steven Odendaal was ahead of Manuel Gonzalez, the Kallio Yamaha rider and the World Championship leader from Switzerland. Fifteen laps before the end, it was Raffaele de Rosa once more, who said goodbye to the battle for the top spots with a mistake. At this point Gonzalez was the leader ahead of Odendaal, Aegerter, JEspersen, Bernardi, Cluzel and Caricasulo. The 2019 world champion Randy Krummenacher was only on P9 behind his Swiss compatriot Marcel Brenner, followed by the two Kawasaki Puccetti team-mates Philipp Öttl and Can Öncü. Two laps later, Aegerter had already reached P2 ahead of Gonzalez and Odendaal had taken command again.
The second half of the exciting WSSP race
For Manuel Gonzalez, the dream of the next podium after Most was over with nine laps to go. The Spaniard ended his hopes with a crash, which of course meant a special drama for him in his home country. With five laps to go, Aegerter had already fought his way past Odendaal and clearly separated from the South African. They were followed by Bernardi, Cluzel, Caricasulo, Krummenacher and on P7 Öttl. A little later, Can Öncü grabbed the surprise man from Denmark, with which Simon Jespersen fell back to P9. Shortly before the end, Marcel Brenner fell and Odendaal was still under pressure from Bernardi. Aegerter won safely in the end, and the World Cup runner-up was almost caught by the Italian in the last lap, but survived on P2. Behind Cluzel, Caricasulo, Krummi and Öttl, Can Öncü made it to eighth place despite starting position 24. Directly ahead of Simon Jespersen and Niki Tuuli in tenth, the young Turk impressively confirmed his upward trend.
