Live blog from Sunday of WorldSBK 2021 in Aragon

The first day brought a lot of tension and drama. The WorldSBK literally fought to the last meter for victory in the WSSP and at least second place. There were many winners and losers and one man who excelled everything with his performance in the premier class of the near-series World Championship. With victory number 100, the reigning and six-time Superbike Champion set another milestone in his unique career. Despite the fact that the Kawasaki had been slowed down literally at the last minute by questionable FIM regulations only 2 days before the first training session, his team-mate Lowes even managed a one-two for the Greens with a sensational performance through P2. There was no better way to give the answer to this disadvantage on the track than the two team-mates did. Below are the results of the WSSP and WSBK on Saturday at a glance.

The tire poker – actually absolutely secondary

There was a lot of discussion about the tires before and after the first race on Saturday. We think that when looking at the selected combination and the performance achieved with it, there was no clear advantage or disadvantage to be found. Proof of this is, for example, the fact that Lowes and Rea put on identical tires and even rode the same bike. But one of them drove away, and the other had to fight for second place in the person of Alex Lowes with a knife between his teeth. Chaz Davies and Toprak Razgatlioglu, on the other hand, opted for a different combination and Scott Redding for a different one from the others. But they all separated from Alex only a tiny six and a half tenths at the finish. In this respect, the tire poker was actually absolutely secondary to the result and the only thing that counted was the driver. This is a good thing, and for the Superpole Race, almost everyone will probably pull the same guy.

The Superpole Race of WorldSBK

The drivers are on the track, and it’s damp but not completely wet. After the start, Redding leads first, but is overtaken by Rea first and then passes the Northern-Irish again. Behind it Lowes in front of Sykes, Haslam and Bautista. Rea was in the lead for a short time, but then has to place himself in P3 behind Redding and Lowes. After lap 1 of 10, Redding is leading, but is already being harassed by Rea, who is back to P2 and takes the lead shortly afterwards. A little later, Rea passes the start-finish line with a large margin on Lowes and Redding, followed by Davies in front of Sykes, Gerloff, Haslam and Toprak. Rea drives away as if it were the easiest thing in the world and Davies and Garrett are already past Redding. Davies is almost 5.5 seconds behind Rea and is harassed by Gerloff. Lowes is also over 2 seconds behind his teammate who drives his own race. Gerloff is now past Davies after 4 laps, it wasn’t enough on the straight, but the Texan made it past the Welshman in the final corner.
The second half of the race
Rea just drove the fastest lap and we are reminded of the 1st race in Donington, when he drove away from all opponents by almost 10 seconds within 3 laps in the rain. Over 5 seconds after halftime and 5 laps Rea is already in front and Garrett is only a little over 1 second behind Lowes. Toprak is on P6 ahead of Bautista and Redding, followed by Haslam, Nozane, Rinaldi and Folger on P12. Sykes is currently the best BMW in the pits and van der Mark in P5 behind Davies, while Laverty is only in P14 behind Locatelli. When there are still 2 laps to go, Rea is lonely in the lead in front of Lowes, about a second behind Gerloff and Chaz Davies with a respectful distance. Van der Mark just drove the fastest race lap on the penultimate lap and Lowes slips but does not fall. The sprint race is over, and Johnny Rea is the overwhelming winner in front of his teammate Alex Lowes and a convincing Garrett Gerloff on the best Yamaha. Behind Davies, van der Mark, Toprak and Bautista, Redding is only eighth and Nozane takes the last point with P9. Haslam is tenth ahead of Rinaldi, Locatelli and Folger, who was caught by the Italian. Below is the ranking list and in italics the drivers without World Championship points.

Garrett Gerloff, the best Yamaha rider and behind the repeated double podium from Kawasaki “best of the rest” during the interview.

The first voices from the panel interview
Garrett Gerloff is of course overjoyed during the interview and is very happy about his first podium. He had asked around the SSP 300 drivers and found out that there was a dry track. Therefore, his tire choice was simply perfect for these conditions. Alex Lowes stated that he could not have followed the pace of his team-mate, but of course he was more than satisfied with 2nd place in this difficult race. After victory number 101 in the WSBK, Jonathan Rea was very happy and stated that he had never taken too much risk, but just kept to his rhythm. He seems to be worlds ahead of the competition, and now he is accordingly full of anticipation for the third and final race on the weekend.

The WorldSBK World Championship
Of course, Jonathan Rea has now increased his lead by a further 3 points and with 2nd place and an additional 9 points, his teammate Alex Lowes is also clearly ahead of Toprak with 9 points in 3rd place with 20 points. Davies at 17, Redding (15) Gerloff (14), Sykes (10), van der Mark (10), Rinaldi (9) and Haslam (8) complete the provisional top ten. In the afternoon there are again 25 points for a win and the first 15 get them, while in the SP-Race this was only the case for the first 9.

The wheelie as the winner in the Superpole Race cost the 6-time world champion about 1 to 2 seconds of his lead over the runner-up as in the first race, but he didn’t care. From position 6 onwards, Johnny’s opponents lost around 3 or more seconds per lap when he gave another demonstration of his driving skills in the SP race.

Supersport 600 race

The start is at 12:30 p.m. local time. After Rea’s drive in the Superpole race, people in the paddock are still shaking their heads. Toprak on P6 was almost 30 seconds behind and if the reigning world champion had taken the last 2 to 3 laps a little easier, it would have been significantly more. But now everyone is preparing for the second race of the Supersport 600, in which the list of contenders for victory should again include at least 3 to 6 names. At the top are Niki Tuuli and Jules Cluzel, the two drivers who fell after a collision in the first race on Saturday. The Finn hit the rear of the Frenchman’s bike with the front wheel, after which they both fell violently. The drivers are on the warm-up lap and the start is immediately on a somewhat slippery track. The situation is much more difficult compared to yesterday.
Start of the race
It is Öttl who took the lead in front of Odendaal and immediately afterwards falls and the German ends up in the gravel and tries to start again afterwards. Krummenacher is already on P5 behind Odendaal and Aegerter when it comes to the winding part of the route in Aragon. Caricasulo also crashed in the same second corner as Öttl, who then drove back to the pits and his bike seems to be impassable. “Krummi” is already in third place behind Bergman and Alcoba, after having passed Odendaal and Aegerter on the first lap. Aegerter fell back to P6 after being overtaken by Luca Bernardi and has Gonzalez on his back. When there are still 11 laps to go, Chris Bergman is already over 2 seconds ahead of Marc Alcoba and Odendaal ahead of Krummenacher is a good 8.5 seconds behind the leader. Behind Bernardi, Gonzales, Soomer, de Rosa and Aegerter. Bernardi has to give up, he apparently has a machine failure.
The last 10 laps
The “Domi-Fighter” is struggling and is only on P9 ahead of Hendra-Pratama, while his compatriot Krummenacher has fallen back to P7. Jules Cluzel is now fourth behind Odendaal, who is just 5 seconds behind Alcoba in P3. Gonzalez has just been pushed to P6 by Soomer, followed by Raffaele de Rosa. Aegerter grabs Krummi behind it and is now eighth. Unless Bergman makes a mistake, the Swede will win the race, but there are still 7 laps to go. The fastest man on the track is currently Jules Cluzel, who is almost on the Odendaal in front of him and is therefore third. Now Alcoba is under pressure from Cluzel, who has already passed Odendaal and the fight for victory is possibly still completely open at the moment when Cluzel takes over the second position.
5 laps left
The Frenchman continues to catch up and his gap to the leader is now just over two and a half seconds. Meanwhile, it looks like the Frenchman will win, or he will fall when Odendaal is behind him in P3 and Soomer and De Rosa are already past Alcoba, who had been second for a long time. Like the Spaniard, Bergmann is now falling far behind, he seems to have overused his tires, or he simply made the wrong choice. Cluzel leads just before Odendaal when there are still 3 laps to drive. It looks like a tough battle for victory with Cluzel in front of Odendaal and a little behind De Rosa and Soomer. All four have a chance of victory when it comes to the penultimate lap. De Rosa is now behind Odendaal, behind Cluzel and Soomer. In the end, it is Odendaal who wins the second race in a row in Aragon ahead of De Rosa, Cluzel and Soomer. Below is the ranking list and in italics the drivers without World Championship points.

Jules Cluzel (GMT Yamaha) as third left in the picture in conversation with his Yamaha brand colleague and double winner Steven Odendaal (Bardahl Evan Bros Yamaha).

The first interviews
In the interview, Jules Cluzel was very satisfied because he didn’t even think about it to fight for victory. To get 16 points in light rain and with almost slicks is an important aspect after having turned out innocently in the first race. Raffaele de Rosa, as second, was still in the lead before the finish curve, but was still satisfied. After a shoulder injury and a lot of physical therapy, he was happy to be able to drive again at all. The race was very difficult, but over time it went better and better for him and now he is overjoyed with P2. Steven Odendaal was of course more than satisfied, he pointed out that it was extremely difficult. In the end, it worked best with intermediate tires and he said hello to everyone in South Africa and was just happy that things went so well for him on this difficult weekend.

Steven Odendaal (Bardahl Evan Bros Yamaha) – the double winner in the run-out lap, after thanking the marshals for their work and being applauded by them.

The second WorldSBK race on Sunday

It is really wet and there are puddles in the pit lane when the riders go on the sighting lap. Jonathan Rea loves these conditions, especially because the conditions are clear and therefore almost no tire poker is conceivable. Over the full distance, the question of the mixture for the rain tires will be at most, but intermediates like in the WSSP with only light rain are not to be expected. We have just observed how Johnny Rea had an intensive discussion on the starting grid with Lucas Mahias, who, as a veteran, also has many years of experience. Lowes and Rea are also in discussion about the situation; like Laverty and Haslam, both are considered to be absolute rain specialists. Rea is now the sole Aragon record holder with 8 wins ahead of Davies with 7, who would have to win to catch up with the Northern Irishman. Before the start, some helpers run to the grid with different bikes, maybe some drivers will try a poker. When asked what he thinks about the situation, van der Mark has just given the answer “really shit”.
The third race of the WSBK weekend
The first 9 on the grid are in the order of the Superpole Race (see earlier in this report). Redding only in P8 and Sykes in 10th place are of course among the losers in terms of the starting position when the drivers go on the warm-up lap. Most of the drivers are on the same tires, while Scotty Redding is apparently playing poker with a slick in the back. After the start it is Rea who leads the race ahead of Gerloff, Lowes, Davies and Toprak. Davies is the first to have a crash and Rinaldi drove out of the pit lane shortly before that, while Sykes is now on P4 in front of Toprak. Redding is in P6, but 2 seconds behind Leader Rea, but the race is still long.
Gerloff messes up
The Texan attacked Rea, who continued to drive through the gravel bed with presence of mind and fell back to P3, while the Texan fell, but got up again. Now Michael van der Mark is the first pursuer of the front in P4 and Toprak is in P3 in front of Rea and Redding directly behind. It is now Razgatlioglu who is leading in front of Alex, Michael, Johnny and Redding and the first 5 are right next to each other. Haslam has just crashed too, he crashed into turn two. It is now van der Mark who is in the lead, ahead of Toprak, Redding, Rea and Lowes when there are 13 laps left. The track is dry on the ideal line and Redding’s strategy is currently working, which is taking the lead. Behind the group with Michael, Toprak, Alex, Johnny and a little back Sykes and Bautista. Mahias is on P8 ahead of Locatelli, Gerloff, Nozane and Rabat. Folger is on P15. While Redding has a lead of over 1.5 seconds, van der Mark, Toprak, Lowes and Rea are fighting for P2.
Gerloff with Long-Lap-Penalty
Because the Texan had hindered Rea with his action, he received this penalty and is currently still in P10. With his poker 10 rounds before the end, Redding seems absolutely safe, while behind it everything is still completely open and Sykes is only just behind the four fighting cocks in front of him. His new teammate van der Mark is still on P2, now ahead of Rea, Lowes and Toprak. With 8 laps left, Redding’s gap has grown to over 7 seconds, but beyond that everything is still open while Michael was able to fend off an attack from Johnny and is still leading the chase group. Folger has already moved up to P10, the German could get his first top ten result of the season with it. A little later, however, Gerloff passed him again. Van der Mark and Rea argue with the knife between their teeth about position 2, with Lowes just behind. Toprak and Sykes fell slightly behind with 6 laps left.
The last 5 laps
Johnny passed “Magic Michael” and Lowes lurks a little behind him, while Sykes was able to pull himself up again and only Toprak is further behind. In turn 1 is Tito Rabat, who missed the turn, and Folger is now in 9th place behind Gerloff and Locatelli when Redding rings in the fourth from last lap. Rea was able to break away from his pursuers, the three of them approaching the first corner and Lowes then has the nose in front of van der Mark and Sykes. Alex Lowes is doing everything possible to keep the two BMW drivers behind him in order to take the third podium of the weekend. Like Rea before, he was able to easily pull away from them when there are still 3 laps to go. Redding is almost 10 seconds ahead of Rea, who is safely ahead of Lowes in P2 and the two BMW drivers only seem to be fighting for fourth place, with Sykes now front for the first time. Folger sits on Gerloff’s neck, the two are now fighting for 7th place behind Toprak when the German is now ahead of the last lap. The race is now over and Redding is sure to win ahead of Rea, Lowes, Sykes, van der Mark, Toprak, Gerloff, Folger and Locatelli. Below is the ranking list and in italics the drivers without World Championship points.

The first interviews after the race
Of course, Rea continues to lead in the World Cup. Lowes said in the interview that he was absolutely satisfied under the circumstances. In the end he had played with the mapping of his bike and with the third podium in a row there was absolutely nothing to complain about. Rea was just happy to just finish and with a lot of instinct he would have even stepped into the gravel and saved himself in motocross style. The bike was set up very well and Scott would have made the right decision and deserved victory. Of course, he reported as one of only two drivers who took the risk and was very satisfied. It was a gamble and this time he risked everything and that morning it didn’t work out. It was a very hard and difficult weekend, and now he is of course very happy to have saved the day with it after only 2 points in the morning.
Intermediate result in the world championship
Jonathan Rea now leads with 57 points ahead of Lowes with 45, Redding (40, Razgatlioglu (30), Sykes and Gerloff (23), van der Mark (21), Davies (17) and Locatelli with 13. Of course, Rea is the overall winner of Aragon with only 5 points less than the maximum, which could not be expected. With his win, Redding achieved the only podium of the weekend at Motorland, thanks mainly to his absolutely risky but fabulously successful tire strategy. In just 5 days the drivers are back on track in Estoril, where Rea and Redding experienced a curious season finale last year. Toprak and Chaz Davies have the best memories of the last race in Portugal in 2020 when they were unlucky on Sunday afternoon. Sunday was the first real ray of hope for BMW after a lot of luck was still in play at P6 from Sykes the day before. With the placements 4 and 5, van der Mark and Sykes were finally able to set the first exclamation mark before they go to Estoril for the second round.

Scott Redding (Aruba.it Ducati) behind Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx) and in front of Chaz Davies (GoEleven Ducati) and Garrett Gerloff (GRT Yamaha) – after only 2 points in the Superpole Race, his tire poker started with slick rear tires and the Englishman won his first win of the season

The last race of the day – WSSP 300

After the warm-up lap, the junior class is serious for the last time this weekend, the SSP 300 will not be there in Estoril. It is Ton Kawakami, ahead of Huertas, Booth-Amos, Ieraci and De Sora, who leads the race after the start. There was a fall in Turn 1 in which several riders were involved. On the long back straight there was the first of many expected changes in leadership when Buis passed Kawakami, behind which the positions were also constantly changing. While the first positions are constantly changing, Ana Carrasco drove the fastest lap to date. The Spaniard is at least currently represented in the top ten. As in the first race on Saturday, Booth-Amos, who is currently in the lead, is one of the most eye-catching drivers after replacing Huertas there. Both Kawakamis are in the top ten. The Frenchman Markarian is another driver who destroys his race with a crash.
The last 8 laps
The first race was only counted over 9 laps according to the red flags, because shortly afterwards there was a double fall in the finish curve and one of the two drivers did not get up afterwards. As can usually be seen in Moto3, no driver is able to clearly set himself apart from his opponents. The 0.4 second lead of Booth-Amos is immediately closed by his opponents in the slipstream on the long back straight. The Englishman stays in front, for the time being, and tries everything to set himself apart from those behind him. When there were still 5 laps to go, he was able to open up a lead of 0.5 seconds, but in the winding part of the route the pursuers are closer to him again.
Battahin Sofuoglu with a double long lap penalty
The young Turk falls shortly afterwards, the race is over for him. The next one at Turn 1 is Kevin Sabatucci, who is on the ground. When there are still 3 laps to go, Booth-Amos is still in front. Buis, Huertas and Ton Kawakami are just behind, however, and on the back straight it is Huertas who gets past the Englishman from the slipstream. On the penultimate lap it is impossible to pinpoint a winner when there is still a very large group of drivers very close together. The race is over and Orradre won ahead of Booth-Amos, Huertas, Okaya, Carrasco and Ton Kawakami. But Orradre gets a penalty and is “only” second. Below is the corrected ranking list and in italics the drivers without World Championship points.

Motorland Aragon route map

WorldSBK has been racing in Aragon since 2011 and the first win was won by Marco Melandri on a Yamaha, while Aprilia ace Max Biaggi won the second run. The following year, the two Italians won again, but in reverse order and Melandri on a BMW. In the following two years it was first Davies and then Sykes on Kawasaki, which each took a double victory.
