Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha) is one of the two fast French MotoGP riders – the young man from Nice invites all spectators from afar to cheer for the French Grand Prix at the Bugatti Circuit this weekend.

French Grand Prix in Le Mans – Saturday live blog

On race day the order is as usual, with Moto3 first, followed by Moto2 and MotoGP. Nevertheless, the sequence in practice and qualifying for the weekend of the French Grand Prix remains reversed. As before in Jerez de la Frontera, the premier class drives on the first two days after Moto3. The reference times on the Bugatti Circuit for the individual classes are:
MotoGP: 1’31.185 Pole & all-time Lap Record (Zarco/Yamaha 2018) / 1’32.309 best Race Lap (Viñales/Yamaha 2017).
Moto2: 1’36.188 Pole & all-time Lap Record (Bagnaia 2018) / 1’36.764 best Race Lap (J. Navarro 2019).
Moto3: 1’41.399 Pole & all-time Lap Record (Masia 2020) / 1’41.690 best Race Lap (Vietti 2020).

Double curve 8, called Garage vert (green garage) of the Bugatti Circuit in Le Mans, was recorded by us in 2019 – for the second time after the previous year, there will be no spectators on the track again this time.

Moto3 FP3

Because it was wet, none of the drivers who were not directly qualified for Q2 could improve. Therefore, the times after FP2 apply to the entry into the second qualifying. Below are the top ten after FP3.

MotoGP FP3

The riders are on the track and of course they all have rain tires, so the third free practice session is nothing more than an opportunity to practice in the wet. After a quarter of an hour Mir leads for Miller, Morbido, Oliveira, Petrux, Rins and on P7 the supposedly slow Fabio Quartararo. Shortly afterwards Jack Miller fell in Turn 6 and tried to get his Ducati back on the gravel. He had set the fastest lap shortly before that with 1’43.857 and Zarco had advanced to P7. Vinales in P5 and Bagnaia in 7th position ahead of Zarco are two drivers who are now in the top ten. While Quartararo, who has now slipped to P13, is in the pits, Pol Espargaró set the fifth-fastest time and there are some who are constantly improving. With 1’42.894 Marc Marquez just set a new provisional best time in wet conditions, for whom the conditions as for Rossi are something completely normal, due to her many years of experience.
The last 15 minutes
Iker Lecuona has just fallen in turn 3, but harmlessly and without injuring himself. Meanwhile, it is no longer raining, but an improvement in time with only 10 minutes left on the clock is hardly to be expected. Quartararo is only in P17 behind Zarco, but the two fastest from FP2 should also be careful not to make a mistake in order to risk an unnecessary fall. With 1’42.508, Oliveira just set a new provisional best time when there are still a good 8 minutes left on the clock. Zarco has now had a good time and is now on P6. With Lorenzo Savadori, the Aprilia surprise man made it to the second-best time, when shortly afterwards Marq Marquez again set a new record. But there are still a good 4 minutes on the clock. The time is up and as expected, the fastest lap times of the FP3 were clearly missed. World Cup leaders Pecco Bagnaia, Aleix Espargaró and both Suzukis will have to try their hand at Q1 with everyone outside the top ten. When entering the pits, Franco Morbidelli tried a bike change, in which he buckled one leg and stumbled into the second Yamaha. After a brief moment of shock, his crew then led him into the pit. Here is the ranking of the FP3 with the drivers in italics who have to go into Q1.

Franco “Morbido” Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha SRT) tripped over his second bike, which he was supposed to practice switching to before the pit, which had obviously gone wrong.

FP3 of Moto2

The drivers are on the track and the first quarter of an hour is soon over when there is little prospect for the riders behind in FP2 to improve in the third free practice session. With 27 minutes left on the clock, Cameron Beaubier is in first place ahead of Jorge Navarro, Augusto Fernandez, Niccolò Bulega and Lorenzo Baldassari. It’s pretty cold, as Jack Dixon, who comes into the box, suggests. As before in MotoGP, the times are still well above those of FP2 on Friday afternoon. There will hardly be any change in yesterday’s ranking of the top 14 for entry into Q2 when there are still 20 minutes left on the clock. In the meantime, Marco Bezzecchi has replaced the American Beaubier at the top. The Sky VR46 Racing driver from Valentino Rossi’s team was the first under 1’46, but he is already safe in Q2 anyway. Tony Arbolino has already achieved a 1’40,500 as the fastest, but the best times from FP2 are still almost 4 seconds away when only 6 minutes are left on the clock. The time of the third free practice has expired. In addition to Jake Dixon, drivers like Beaubier, Lüthi, Baldassari, Ogura and Syahrin also have to make it into Q1. Below is the ranking list of FP3 with the drivers in italics who have to go into Q1. Alonso Lopez replaced Yari Montella, who was declared unfit on Saturday.

Moto3 Q1

Yuki Kunii has just fallen when the clock is still 6 minutes. He stumbles on turn four when he gets up. The time in Q1 is up and we have made it to Q2 Suzuki, Foggia, Salac and Alcoba. World Cup leader Pedro Acosta failed and started from far behind, this was the first real sensation of Saturday. Nevertheless, the 16-year-old Spaniard from 21st place on the grid has podium chances on Sunday, because in Moto3 even a pole position is usually worth less than in any other class.

The Q2 of Moto3
The drivers are on the track, and it is likely to rain soon, which is why it is highly conceivable that an early attack on a fast lap will be advisable. On turn 12, Niccolò Antonelli and Riccardo Rossi fell together, which should seriously affect their chances. The rain has already started and except for Migno everyone is already in the pits to switch to rain tires when there are still a good 10 minutes on the clock. Now the first rated laps are driven and the fastest are constantly taking over from the front. With Gabriel Rodrigo, a Spaniard is ahead four minutes before the end. A little later, Deniz Öncü is even faster and Jaume Masia also undercut his compatriot’s time. Filip Salac has a crash before the target curve in turn 14 and now the Scot McPhee is in the lead. The checkered flag is shown and at the end the front row consists of Migno, Rossi and Masia. McPhee is fourth ahead of Rodrigo and Antonelli. Below is the ranking list with the starting order, riders and placements from Q1 are listed in italics.

MotoGP FP4

The riders are currently on the track for the warm-up, and it will be a good half an hour before the first battle for Q2 is fought. It’s still raining lightly, which means that Q1 and Q2 should also be a wet affair. Johann Zarco seems to be very comfortable. The Frenchman is ahead of Bagnaia, Rabat and Miller after the first quarter of an hour. His time of 1’34.099 is simply sensationally strong due to the still semi-wet track. Since it is now drying up again and is currently no longer raining, our first assessment of Q1 and Q2 is no longer valid, unless that changes again soon. The track is as good as dry on the ideal line, which of course makes riders like Quartararo and the rookies with hardly any rain experience in MotoGP particularly happy. Ten minutes before the end of FP4, the young Frenchman is promptly in front and Pol also undercut Zarco’s previous best time. Q1 will start shortly and the times from FP4 mean little because qualifying is about starting positions.
Both Repsol Hondas on the ground
Shortly before the end, Pol Espargaró fell in Turn 3, although he wasn’t really at the limit, and a little later Repsol Honda team-mate Marc Marquez also found himself in the gravel trap in Turn 9. It had started to rain again, which is why the two had simply risked too much, which does not speak for their cleverness. Now it will be particularly tricky for Q1 because the conditions are very unstable. Below are the first ten of the FP4 after the time runs out.

MotoGP Q1

After it rains lightly again, the air temperature is just 14 degrees Celsius. Only two drivers make it into Q2 and the list of contenders is large, including both Suzukis, Aleix Espargaró and Pecco Bagnaia. It’s a dance on a knife’s blade to push almost 300 HP to the limit on the wet track. The best time, when there are still a good 11 minutes on the clock, was achieved by Joan Mir ahead of Pecco and Suzuki team-mate Alex Rins. A little later, Mir leads Rins, Lecuona and Rabat. The last minutes will decide, currently no forecast can be made, as Aleix Espargaró also speaks out with the second-best time. Alex Marquez fell and lost his chance when Aleix leads Petrux and the third to last minute has dawned. Tito Rabat also fell shortly before the end. Q1 is over and then the top ten with the two qualified for Q2 in bold. Aleix, Pecco and the Suzuki didn’t make it, the second sensation of the day!

MotoGP Q2

The two Petronas Yamaha SRT riders Rossi and Morbido ride out of the pits with slicks, making a game out of it that had already worked out for Rossi here at Le Mans. It was in Q1 in 2019 when the old champion was 1.595 seconds faster than everyone else at the Circuit Bugatti. Zarco set the first best time on rain tires with 1’39.715 ahead of Rossi and Morbido on their slick tires. Shortly thereafter, Rossi missed a new best time in the finish curve, after that Miller was ahead of Pol and Quartararo. Marquez missed the top 3 with the fourth-best time, when the clock still had a good 6 minutes. Shortly thereafter, Zarco pushed himself onto the provisional pole, but was ousted one after the other by Miller and then Pol from there. With 3 minutes left on the clock, Marquez leads in front of Nakagami and Pol, with 3 Hondas in front. When it rains lightly again at Turn 1, the attack by the Honda drivers seems to have proven to be at the right moment. When it rains lightly again at Turn 1, the attack by the Honda drivers seems to have been at the right moment, but they hadn’t counted on Vinales, Zarco and his compatriot. Fabio is on pole ahead of Maverick and Jack and Morbido and Zarco also made it before Marc Marquez! Pol Espargaró fell in his last attack and with Marquez there is only one Honda in the first two rows and the Suzukis start from far behind on Sunday. Below is the ranking list after Q2 with the placements and drivers from Q1 in italics.

Johann Zarco in the Pramac Ducati Box – slightly disappointed, of course, because he was the best Ducati the day before. But points will only be distributed on Sunday and his starting position is still excellent for a podium.

Moto2 Q1

The drivers are on the track, and you would have expected a lot of them right in Q2. With the US boys Roberts and Beaubier, as well as Ramirez, Dixon, Ogura and Baldassari, the list of candidates for the second qualifying is long, but only 4 can make it. Shortly after half-time, Ogura is ahead of Corsi, “Balda” and Roberts. A little later it is the US-American who ranks up with a 1’36.671 and takes the lead when there are still just under 5 minutes on the clock. Dixon and Lüthi are in the top ten, but like Syahrin they both have to hope for an improvement shortly before the end. Marcos Ramirez fell in the last minute. Q1 is over and then the top ten with the drivers in bold who made it into Q2. While Dixon, Lüthi and Beaubier clearly missed it, Simone Corsi made it together with his MV Agusta Forward team-mate Baldassari.

Moto2 Q2

The weather is going crazy today, just before Q2 it started to rain again, and the track should be really wet this time, after it was as good as dry before in Q1 and Q2 of MotoGP and after that also in Moto2. After Ai Ogura, Marcel Schrötter also fell, the German had caught it when entering the finish curve when his front wheel slipped away. Jorge Navarro is next on the gravel, while Gardner is on top ahead of Bendsneyder, Ogura and Manzi. After Bulega, Simone Corsi also slips, but then tries to continue when the clock is just under 5 minutes. The time has expired, followed by the provisional first ten, before the official result is published. Hopefully this will not take forever at FIM, as it did after FP2 on Friday.

This live blog is closed now, and we will continue with a new one tomorrow..

Circuit Bugatti

With only 5 left turns and 9 right turns, the Bugatti circuit, like most of the circuits, is clockwise. For the opponents of Ducati it is reassuring that there is no long straight here either. The maximum is 647 m, with which the lightning-fast reds have to wait until Mugello in order to enjoy their strongest triumph. La Chapelle and Garage Vert are somewhat reminiscent of the almost 180 degree curves 6 and 13 of Jerez, but otherwise the characteristics of the Circuit Bugatti are completely different.
