Live blog for the first day of WorldSBK 2021
Even before the drivers hit the track in Motorland Aragon for the first time, the FIM had caused a lot of head shaking just two days before with an extremely questionable regulation. With BMW and Kawasaki, two manufacturers brought a completely new model, but one of them was slowed down before the first free practice. With very questionable arguments, which can actually only mean one thing: The BMW M-1000RR seems to be a real bad design compared to the Kawasaki ZX-10RR Ninja. Otherwise, it would not be necessary to tune the blue and white machine by almost 1000 rpm higher in order to be even halfway at eye level with the green one. We therefore advise you to reserve one of the new ninjas at the nearest dealer, because it should be a real rocket on two wheels. Below are the results of some drivers since 2015 and their results in Motorland Aragon.

The questionable revelation limit of the FIM with the “Kawasaki castration”

The statistics with the previous Aragon winners

WSBK – the first free practice on Friday
Before the 26th race starts in Aragon on Saturday afternoon, the first free practice session is on the track. Rea is fastest from the start ahead of Haslam, Gerloff, Lowes and van der Mark. Shortly thereafter, Lowes is one and a half tenths ahead of Rea with a 1’50.677. The reference time is the qualifying time recently set by Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki) with 1’48.528 at the test in Aragon, his absolute and official lap record of 2020 is 1’48.860. At the halfway point of the first free training session, Lowes is still ahead of Rea, Sykes, Razgatlioglu, Haslam, Gerloff and Bautista. Cavalieri has not yet completed a lap and Eugene Laverty is on his first. So far, of course, no driver is on the hunt for a best time because it’s about the race set-up and not a good start position.
The last quarter of an hour of FP1
Rinaldi is currently on P10 ahead of van der Mark, Rabat, Folger and Laverty. Rookie Lucas Mahias drove the new ZX-10RR for the first time just a week ago in Misano and takes it easy at the beginning without risking too much. Therefore, it is only on P19 for the time being. When there are 10 minutes left on the clock, Lowes is still ahead of Rea, Sykes, Toprak, Haslam, Gerloff, Bautista, Davies, Redding and Rabat. Lowes’ time is far from a record at 1’50.498, and it only means that like everyone else he should be on racing tires. It doesn’t look like, except for Toprak and Davies, there is still the hunt for the best time on qualifiers in FP1 and some, like Tom Sykes, are already sitting comfortably in the pits and taking a sip (no beer). The time will soon run out, and we will publish the first ranking list of the day, which is of course not very informative for qualifying. Toprak ahead of Davies, Lowes, Gerlof, Rinaldi and Rea. The time monitor is just going crazy, which one you are using here.

WSSP – the first free practice on Friday
The first free practice session is on the track. After the first quarter of an hour, Odendaal leads before Aegerter, Soomer, Öttl, Cluzel and Caricasulo. The commentators of the WorldSBK live broadcast are meanwhile taking a break and those who watch it on the stream can only hear the engines, as a reader just wrote to us. Perhaps not everyone thinks the Supersport 600 class is particularly interesting, but we do. As we found out, nobody here has the technology under control at the moment, or there were drunk people at work.
The result of technical Problems
While Tuuli leads ahead of Odendaal, Aegerter, Soomer and Öttl in the live monitor, Bernardi, Bergmann and Krummenacher are at the top according to the official live timing. It’s best to take it with a sense of humour, not to kill anyone else for it. While the last 10 minutes have begun, we abstain from commenting on the current status because of such contradicting information. We are now waiting until the end of FP1 and only then will we publish the official result here.
The solution to the riddle
In the meantime it has been clarified that our timing monitor got stuck, but the time continued to run. A complete reset solved the problem and 5 minutes before the end everything is fine. Shortly before the end, Tuuli leads before Öttl, Odendaal, Aegerter, Caricasulo and Cluzel. Krummenacher, on the other hand, has only driven one lap so far and is apparently in the pits with technical problems. Below the ranking after FP1. Jarno Saarinen, who tragically passed away 48 years and one day ago in Monza, would definitely be proud of his young compatriot.

A few side notes before the second free practice session in the afternoon
As we were assured on the sidelines of the event, Kawasaki had of course expected that the FIM would deliberately put stones in their way with the new ZX-10RR. In this respect, appropriate precautions were taken even for the now highly questionable determination of the maximum permitted speed of the Kawasaki Ninja with the clear disadvantage in order not to be completely without a chance. Even a man from the competition reacted behind his hand with a shake of his head to the unsporting decision of the FIM. Above all, the fact that the new rev limits are only published 2 days before the start of the season, literally at the last minute, causes a lack of understanding throughout the paddock.
Confirmation of the reverse conclusion from the new rev limits
During the break we heard an interesting statement about the “real” superbikes from an engineer from the paddock who wanted to remain anonymous. He emphasized that anyone could imagine which bikes would have to be by far the best for their buyers. Definitely ahead are the Yamaha R1 and Kawasaki ZX-10RR, because all the others would have to be extremely tuned with higher speeds compared to the series. With a twinkle in his eye, he gave us to understand that otherwise only the much more expensive Panigale V4R would come into question as an alternative. But with the Greens and the YZF R1 you get most of the money.
FP2 WSSP 300
In the first free practice session, Orradre from Spain was the fastest ahead of Booth-Amos, Buis, Loureiro, Di Sora, Huertas, Kawawakami and Sofuoglu. There are no Germans at all this time, just the Freudenberg KTM Team with one more driver. Dutchman Steeman was nineteenth in FP1 ahead of Ieraci. The drivers of the junior class are already on the track when Alejandro Carrion is on the ground shortly afterwards. Fortunately, the young Spaniard was not injured, and hopefully the Medical Center won’t get a job today either. With 20 minutes left on the clock, Huertas leads Ton Kawakami, Booth-Amos, Loureiro and Sofuoglu. Carrasco had recently dropped from 11th to 15th position. The Dutchman Ruben Bijman is another casualty, but apparently did not suffer any injuries in his crash despite a highsider. In the last 10 minutes you can expect the leadership to change several times and the ranking of the second free practice see below.

FP2 WorldSBK
The drivers are now on the track and for the second time that day there are 45 minutes available to prepare for the day of the first race in the best possible way. As usual, this will start in the afternoon at 2 p.m. local time. It’s Johnny Rea who immediately sets the best times ahead of Bautista and Lowes. The Northern Irishman doesn’t need any starting time for this, he can go out and do a good lap straight away. In addition to his almost terrifying consistency, this is just one of his many qualities that gives his opponents a headache.
Red flag
Michael van der Mark is now lying in the gravel bed, who lost his BMW at Turn 8. The M-1000RR then lies smoking on the tyre barrier behind and red flags are shown for temporary termination. The Dutchman appears unharmed and returns to the pits as a pillion passenger on a scooter. Below is the picture with the no longer usable BMW and “Magic Michael”, who has just got up again and then looked a bit shaky on his feet at the beginning.

The drivers are back on track, and it will take another half an hour before the second free practice session is over. Michael van der Mark reported after his crash that it was a bit “shitty” from his point of view. Not much happened because it was just a harmless slip, but afterwards his bike overturned violently in the gravel and looked pretty demolished afterwards. Behind Rea are the two HRC Honda drivers Bautista and Haslam, followed by Lowes, Davies, Rinaldi and Toprak. The day is over for van der Mark because replacement bikes like in MotoGP are not allowed here. Why that is actually the case does not make sense to everyone. A lot of money could also be saved with more skilful seasonal planning.
The last 15 minutes
Nothing has changed in the first positions when Christophe Ponsson slipped barely fifteen minutes before the end. With Chaz Davies, the “Neo-Privateer” is now in the lead, who of course is on the road with factory support in the GoEleven Ducati Team. It is to be expected that from now on some drivers will go on the hunt for a fast lap when the clock is just over 10 minutes. Toprak’s best time from FP1 has remained untouched so far. His 1,49,952 clearly indicate that he was on qualifier tires. Rea was a good 4 tenths faster in the tests a good 2 weeks ago. But now his Kawasaki was slowed down before the first weekend and this may cost him half a second right at the beginning. Redding has now set the third best lap-time and the FP2 will soon be up. The following is the ranking from FP2, Toprak was fastest in FP1 in the morning. Van der Mark has the fewest laps due to his fall after just under 10 minutes with only 8 and in general the BMW drivers are not very close to the front after day 1.

FP2 WorldSSP
The riders are on the track now. The “Krummenator” must have taken its drops of valerian in order to go on the track without too much pressure after the frustration of the FP1 in the middle category. We do not know in detail whether all of his people on the team are really proven experts, or whether there are possibly some amateurs among them. What is clear, however, is that his position after the morning is far from what he set as his goal before the start of the season. The Swiss is now on the track with the others from the beginning. As in FP1, Niki Tuuli is ahead on MV Agusta half an hour before the end. Behind them Aegerter, Odendaal, Bernardi, Cluzel, Krummenacher and Öttl.
The last 20 minutes
While the former WSBK star Michel Fabrizio seems to be struggling to keep up with the front, it is the expected faces at the top. With 20 minutes left on the clock, Tuuli is still leading ahead of Odendaal, Aegerter, Caricasulo, Bernardi, Cluzel, Krummenacher, Gonzalez, Öttl and De Rosa. As in WorldSBK, the drivers don’t seem to be able to get the best times of the morning. The “Krummenator” has no reference from the FP1, but now it set the second-best time with 1’55.489. Below the result of FP2.
