Aerial view of the former Autodromo di Santamonica near Misano, today renamed International Circuit Marco Simoncelli. The route with the horseshoe shape is one of the most traditional of the WSBK, along with Donington Park, Phillip Island and Assen.

Live blog from WorldSBK Friday in Misano

Only a few of the WorldSBK pilots have ridden here before, at least in terms of their current bikes and World Championship races, very few have ridden on the route near the Adriatic coast. In addition to the record winner and defending champion Rea, many have already shown good races here. From his teammate Alex Lowes to his Yamaha successor Toprak and Honda’s Bautista to Tom Sykes as a four-time winner and second-best active rider. Leon Haslam, Michael van der Mark and Chaz Davies were also on the podium in Misano, along with the aforementioned. But only the Welshman has already ridden the same bike as he was currently racing before, while the reigning world champion and everyone else will be competing here for the first time with their current equipment. That’s why everyone is excited to see how things will develop in the only 2 hours of training before the starting grid will be on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Superpole.

Lucas Mahias (Puccetti Kawasaki, in the picture on the right) photographed by us in Assen in April 2019 at the WorldSSP Paddock Show Interview – Misano was the only track on which the fast Frenchman with the still very new Kawasaki ZX-10RR Ninja was before Could test the start of the season. Nevertheless, he is still ahead of former MotoGP ace Jonas Folger and Eugene Laverty (both BMW) as one of the most experienced in the world championship in 15th place.

The first free practice on Friday – WorldSBK

The drivers take to the track for the first free practice session and right at the front is the reigning world champion with his Kawasaki ZX-10RR. Together with his teammate Alex Lowes, Johnny Rea is one of the majority of drivers who have not yet tested here with this year. With 1’35.705, Toprak Razgatlioglu is one of the first with a fast lap after his test in spring and holds the first best time this morning after just under 10 minutes. Shortly afterwards, local hero Rinaldi drives the factory Ducati by 0.048 seconds faster than the Turk. Lowes has the third-best time so far ahead of Gerloff, Sykes, Haslam and Rabat. At the right bend of Turn 11, the fastest drive around 270 km / h, while in the smaller classes most pilots even stay at full throttle there.
The second half of FP1
Redding just set the fifth-fastest time and Rea is holding back with an attack until then. Now Scott drove the third-best time and Rinaldi also improved by a little over a tenth at the front. Meanwhile, Lowes, Bassani and Gerloff drove a better time than Redding, who is only on P6 ahead of Rabat and Sykes. Rea is in the box and Folger has just entered. Scotty also had to pit because he seemed to have a technical problem on his Ducati. When there were 10 minutes left on the clock, Rea set a slightly faster time for the first time, which put him in 13th position. But that’s over a second slower than the fastest, and we don’t know which tires he’s on. Now Rabat is third fastest and with that the MotoGP switch can do a really fast lap for the first time this season. Rinaldi was the first to run under 1’35 minutes and Rea has now reached P8. The Northern-Irishman increases with it in small steps.
The last 5 minutes
It looks like the new track limits, so hated by practically all drivers, will cause a lot of trouble in Superpole. As in Estoril, we see numerous of the riders clearly in the green while they are on the hunt for good lap times. With a good two minutes to go, Toprak is now ahead of Rinaldi, Davies, Bassani and Rabat. Behind Gerloff and Rea. Now comes the checkered flag and below the result of the morning.

WorldSSP 600 FP1

The riders are on the track and with 40 minutes the first free practice 5 is less long than in WorldSBK. Pole Szkopek is the first in the gravel trap in Turn 10, but can get up himself while his bike is quite damaged. While the director fades in that Philipp Öttl allegedly fell, we recognize the bike of his Turkish teammate Can Öncü. Anyone who bought the streaming subscription as a fan is unlucky, by the way, because, unlike the premier class of the series-based World Cup, the WSSP is not commented on when it comes to free practice sessions. Another driver, Niki Tuuli, crashed on Turn 12 after he was hindered by another rider. After the first quarter of an hour, Aegerter holds the best time and his Swiss compatriot Krummenacher is finally in the first 10 on P6, after he had often tested here during the winter break.
The second half of FP1
Caricasulo now set the second-fastest time and is behind Domi on P2. Fuligni, Cluzel, Gonzalez and World Championship leader Odendaal follows on position 3, while Krummi slipped to P9. Now Fuligni is leading ahead of Caricasulo, Aegerter, Cluzel and Sommer. Krummenacher on P10 and Öttl is fourteenth behind De Rosa. Former WSBK star Michel Fabrizio eats hard bread on P18. With Steve Odendaal, the world championship leader is currently only 10th. With 10 minutes left on the clock, Odendaal has reached P4 and Öttl is still in 14th place. With the fourth best time, the “Krummenator” showed a sign of life behind Fuligni, Caricasulo, Cluzelund in front of Aegerter, Odendaal and Gonzalez. A little later the session is over and there have been some postponements. Below the ranking list of the first free practice.

WorldSBK FP2

Scott Redding lost around 25 minutes that morning in his pits with a technical problem on his Ducati. That is why he only drove the twelfth fastest time and the best BMW with van der Mark can only be found on P10. But the times from FP1 have little meaning for Saturday anyway. In contrast to MotoGP, the times from FP1 to FP3 are irrelevant for Superpole on Saturday at 11 a.m. As we announced, two local heroes, Rinaldi and Bassani, were very quick in the morning and Honda is not doing as badly as it was in Estoril. Not unexpectedly, the BMW drivers in FP1 seemed to have a lot more trouble. The minimal program with only a few tests before the start of the season for the blue-whites seems to have been a mistake.
The riders just went out on the track
Redding’s problem doesn’t seem to have been resolved by Ducati and Rinaldi is still in the box too. Shortly before, Scotty, sitting on the chair in the box, gave us a sign, as if he was going to go to sleep next, still in the mood for a joke as we know him. With a time of 1’35.166, Jonathan Rea just set the best time in the afternoon, just ahead of Lowes. It is currently the fourth best of the day. About 10 minutes late, Rinaldi drives out of the box, while Redding is still stuck. Lucas Mahias has just produced the first crash in FP2. Shortly before that, the fast Frenchman had set the fifth-fastest time on his Kawasaki, behind Rea, Toprak, Lowes and Sykes. After the second-best time in the afternoon, Razgatlioglu discussed his impressions in the pits with his crew, while Redding had not been on the track for a quarter of an hour. The Englishman had already missed half of FP1 in the morning and at least put on his leather suit.
Second half of FP2
Rinaldi just set a new best time of the afternoon with 1’35.037 and Redding is still not out of the box. Scotty finally puts on his gloves, and he now has a little over 20 minutes left, just like in the morning in the first free practice. Now Lowes is the first to achieve a time below 1’35 and is on P1 ahead of Rinaldi, Rea, Toprak, Sykes and Mahias. Redding has now made at least P11 on one of his first timed laps. A little later, Rinaldi is back in front and Scott improved to 6th position. Shortly thereafter, Redding is on P2, but Rea is out again and a little later sets the second-best time before the Englishman because Rinaldi was already a tad faster again. Folger just made it to P14, but is still far behind BMW brand colleague Sykes in 6th.
The last quarter of an hour
With the third-best time, Toprak has just displaced Redding to P4, followed by Lowes, Bautista, Sykes, Bassani, Mahias and Davies. The latter has just been replaced by Gerloff on P10 and is behind Rabat, van der Mark, Haslam and Folger. The bike of Mahias who fell early is still being worked on, and maybe it’ll be enough for a lap or two with the Frenchman, who is still in P9. Five minutes before the end, Lowes set the second-best time with 1’34.628 and shortly afterwards Davies crashes on turn 14, but can get up again and try to continue. The next is Tito Rabat, who is lying on the ground in the same place as Chaz, but apparently has a problem with his bike afterwards, unlike the Welshman. Alvaro Bautista also can’t help it shortly before the end and ends up in the gravel trap at turn 4. The time is up and there was only a few shifts in the last 2 minutes. Below is the ranking of FP2, without any impact on the Superpole on Saturday in terms of starting positions.

WorldSSP 600 FP2

The drivers are on the track and, unlike WorldSBK, it is the drivers’ last free practice session before Superpole. After not being up front in the morning, Öttl is now in the top 3 after just under 10 minutes, behind Aegerter and Odendaal. Tuuli is now with P4 in the front and Cluzel just behind in P5. Raffaele De Rosa is now also in the top ten, after having been relatively far behind in the morning like Kawasaki brand colleague Öttl. The little Italian landed in the gravel bed half an hour before the end, but luckily he wasn’t injured. Roberto Mercandelli, who is completely unknown internationally and who briefly held the fastest time before Aegerter was a tad faster, proved how important knowledge of the route can be. The young Italian fell shortly afterwards and a little later his compatriot Fuligni was also on the ground in turn 14, but both were harmless falls. A little later, the Finn Takkala was also lying in the gravel, he too without injuring himself.
The last quarter of an hour of Friday training
Behind Aegerter, Mercandelli and Cluzel is “Krummi” on P4 in front of Öttl, Caricasulo, Tuuli and Odendaal. Gonzalez has now set the third-best time when the clock is still 10 minutes. Shortly afterwards, Federico Caricasulo takes over from the young Spaniard in P3, ahead of Aegerter and Mercandelli. A little later Tuuli and Odendaal also finished in the top 5 and Gonzalez is behind in P6. Shortly afterwards, however, the Spaniard manages the provisional best time with 1’38.473. Federico Fuligni also falls two and a half minutes before the end, but remains uninjured. The time is up now and this was the last free practice for today.
