Michael van der Mark after Friday: “It’s not exactly where we want to be. The FP1 session felt okay and I felt good on the bike and the lap times were relatively okay which I was happy about. Then we tried to change a few settings on the bike in the afternoon, but we had a lot of trouble afterwards ” (© BMW Motorrad WorldSBK).

Live blog: Race-Saturday of the third WorldSBK round in Misano

As of this season, there have been two terms in the paddock that have made practically all teams and drivers grim. As in MotoGP, we are talking about the newly introduced so-called track limits and “yellow flags”, for which the Adriatic literally hailed cancellations of times driven. In FP2 of the WSSP 600 alone, one page was not enough to list all the pilots’ “misconduct”. We fully agree with those concerned that it is the most questionable change in the regulations since the introduction of the rule, which was valid until 2018, when the top 9 of the first run had to start in the reverse order of the finish line for the second race. The winner was punished for his performance by having to start from position 9 afterwards.

Scott Redding (Arubat.it Ducati) with Toprak Razgatlioglu on the pillion waving to the sparsely occupied audience. The two are currently the closest pursuit of Johnny Rea, who is already 35 points ahead of the Turk in the interim standings after two laps.

The World Championship third and his demanding Saturday
However, one of them had very different problems on Friday than the new regulations. Scott Redding only got around half of the time in the first two free practice sessions, the reason for this can be found in our review of Friday. He should be under particularly strong pressure today, also because his team-mate Rinaldi was clearly faster than the Englishman in FP1 and FP2. After his first bad mistake in the last race in Estoril, it even slipped to 3rd place in the World Championship and beating a Toprak Ratzgatlioglu in top form, as well as your own stable colleague at his home race, is already challenging enough. But to also try to defeat the World Cup leader is simply an unbelievable challenge. It will be a very demanding Saturday for Scotty, and it will be interesting to see how he gets out of the affair.

The third free practice on Saturday

For Garrett Gerloff, the Superpole result doesn’t matter today. The US boy from Texas has to start out of the pit lane on Saturday afternoon due to his crash in Estoril, in which he also threw Rinaldi out of the race. On the first day in Misano there were almost as many crashes in the 3 classes with 21 crashes as in Portugal (25), 4 of which were due to the WSSP 300 riders who had not competed in Portugal.
The FP3 on Saturday morning
At halftime, like the day before, Rinaldi leads again in front of surprise Laverty, Lowes and Redding. Shortly thereafter, Jonathan Rea moved up to second place. With 1’34.018, the Italian drove a time this morning that was over half a second faster than the rest of the riders. After Eugene Laverty’s accident at Turn 10, red flags came six and a half minutes before the end and everyone hoped that the notorious unlucky Northern Ireland is not seriously injured. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the private BMW rider will be active again this weekend because there is also an ambulance at the Tramonto curve. Most of the riders are going on the track for 2 or a maximum of 3 laps when it was released again. Redding, Toprak and Lowes are among the first to improve afterwards. Below is the ranking of the FP3.

Superpole of WorldSSP 300

Except for sector 3 with Razgatlioglu, Michael Ruben Rinaldi was the fastest everywhere and the host should be the man to be beaten in the Superpole of WorldSBK. But first it is the turn of the WSSP 300 and then the middle class, before it comes to the starting grid in the premier class of the near-series world championship. When there are 10 minutes left on the clock, Perez Gonzalez leads ahead of Perez Selva, Huertas, Meuffels and Sofuoglu. The Australian Khouri fell in Turn 3, but can get up again immediately, which unfortunately was not the case with Laverty in Turn 10 after his crash. Except for Ton Kawasaki in P4, nothing has changed at the top other than 5 minutes left. It is with Bahattin the cousin of Kenan Sofuoglu, who creates the best time in the end.

Superpole of WorldSSP 600

The drivers are on the track and the fastest are initially Fuligni and Gonzalez. Shortly thereafter, Bernardi is ahead of Öttl, Fuligni, Aegerter and Gonzalez. Niki Tuuli is the first to have a crash and the Finn should have problems making it to a good time in time. It was a highsider on Turn 3 and the MV does not seem operational after its fall. Ten minutes before the end, Steven Odendaal managed the second-best time so far behind Aegerter. With 5 minutes left on the clock, Gonzalez is ahead of Aegerter and Soomer. Tuuli can still drive a few more laps and shortly here will be the Superpole ranking, synonymous with the starting grid. A little later the Finn was lying on the ground again, by the way.

Superpole of WorldSBK

There are spectators in the stands again and, not for the first time, we are surprised at the strange behavior of the organizers. Instead of spreading the visitors over the entire route, they are crammed together in the small space of the few open areas. All that’s missing is a sign saying “give the virus a chance”! As mentioned at the beginning, his time in Superpole will not play a role for Garrett Gerloff this time, he has to start out of the pits in the afternoon. The session has opened and the drivers are now on the track, as usual they only have a quarter of an hour for a good lap in order to be as close to the front of the grid as possible.
Superpole without the participation of Laverty
As feared, Eugene Laverty is not there and according to the official statement he is still at the Medical Center for a detailed examination after his crash in Turn 10. Meanwhile, Jonathan Rea set his first new personal best and was more than half a second faster than Rinaldi in P4 behind Toprak and Mahias. Behind Davies, “Loca”, Lowes, Sykes and Haslam. Shortly afterwards, “Mister Superpole” Sykes pushed Rinaldi, who was on P4, one position back. Gerloff, of all people, has now fallen, for whom the SP is not about anything. The Texan had slipped in Turn 1 and now Redding has set the fourth-fastest time to date, provisionally making it into the top five ahead of Sykes.
The last minutes of the Superpole
In the last five minutes, Rea is on the road with Mahias in tow and the Northern Irishman improves his mark to 1’33.416 and thus a new all-time lap record in Misano. Behind it currently Lowes, Mahias, Toprak and Redding. Rinaldi drove the second-best time and was then narrowly ousted by Redding when there was still one lap to go. Sykes manages P5 just before time runs out and has one more option. The time has run out, and the following is the ranking, which is synonymous with the starting line-up, apart from Gerloff. The World Championship leader is now on pole position for the third time in a row, and it was only in Superpole that he really showed his cards for the first time.

The first interviews
Scott Redding is satisfied with P3 after just one session with two half-missed free practice sessions on Friday. The Englishman believes several strategies will be used in the race and is confident about the first race on Saturday afternoon. Toprak Razgatlioglu agreed with starting position 2 and noted that the race was, as always, much more important. From his position he would attack, and he would even be fine to miss pole position because it would only mean more pressure. The World Cup leader apparently saw it a little differently. The Pole man is of course very satisfied, and he saw many in the audience with his T-shirt, and now of course he wants to try to have a good start in the first race. Jonathan Rea looks confident and few would have expected after three best times from Rinaldi that the Italian would only be on row 2 with Sykes and Lowes.

Supersport 300 race 1

Before the WorldSBK, the junior class drivers are now at the start. Pole setter Bahattin Sofuoglu is in P2 behind Perez Gonzales as the drivers come through the first corners. But after the first round, De Cancellis, Perez Silva and Sofuoglu are in the lead. The positions change constantly and like in Moto3 there is a huge leading group. Sometimes three of them drive into the corners side by side and when there are still 13 laps to go, Sofuoglu was the first to fall and the race is over for the young Turk. Before that, there was a contact with Steeman at Turn 7, which is still being investigated by the race management and may result in the Dutchman being punished. Steeman is then on position 3 behind Huertas and De Cancellis. The first 25 drivers are 11 laps before the end of the race within 5 seconds.
There are still 10 laps to go
Sylvain Markarian fell and shortly afterwards a package with 3 riders hit the ground. It is of course impossible to make a forecast for the podium because the positions will probably change constantly until the last corner. With eight laps to go, Ana Carrasco drove the fastest race lap to date, but the Spanish lady is currently only on P13. Samuel di Sora just had to retire on Turn 8 with a technical problem. Six drivers have a slight lead over the pursuers with 6 laps to go. These are Huertas, De Cancellis, Steeman, Booth-Amos, Gennai and Okaya. A little later, however, the others are back, with Carrasco now on P7. The next one with a crash is Unai Orradre, when there are still 5 laps to go.
Showdown in the first race of the day
The top group is still huge with 17 drivers when it comes to the third from last lap. De Cancellis leads before Booth-Amos, Steeman, Huertas, Gennaio and Meuffels. With 2 more laps to go, the first 3 separated slightly. Steeman is no longer part of it after a mistake before, it is De Cancellis, Huertas and Booth-Amos who seem to make the podium among themselves. The Spaniard wins ahead of the English and French, below the ranking. In italics the drivers without World Championship points, winner Huertas is currently also World Championship leader.

The first interviews
The Frenchman says he narrowly missed the win after losing two positions close to the finish. But Hugo De Cancellis is still satisfied, and he will try again tomorrow. Tom Booth-Amos wants to attack again on Sunday, but he only narrowly lost the championship lead to the winner. Sunday is a new day, and he will do everything to get important points again. Huertas had quite a pain in his knee after colliding with another driver, he said. But of course he is very happy with his victory, and he is already looking forward to the next day with the second race of the weekend.

On the podium from left: Tom Booth-Amos (GB, P2), winner and new world championship leader Adrian Huertas from Spain and third-placed Frenchman Hugo De Cancellis, all on Kawasaki.

WorldSBK race 1 – the highlight of Saturday

It is close to 30 degrees Celsius and many of the visitors wear their mouth guards on their chins, as they are usually all crammed together. But let’s focus on the race and hopefully without a crash as bad as Eugene Laverty’s in FP3 in the morning, after a long period of red flags causing a crash. Polemann Rea has just arrived at the starting grid, where his North Irish compatriot will be missing due to a neck strain and several bruises with the BMW. Laverty is really unlucky on duty, and we wish him a speedy recovery! There is still a small chance of participating in tomorrow’s Superpole Race, but we are rightly rather skeptical. Before the start in row 2, Rinaldi cools his forehead with ice packs while sitting on the ground, while Tom Sykes stands, as usual, with his legs apart next to his BMW. An Italian woman is singing the hymn of Italy with great fervor, in her case of course exceptionally without a mask and therefore all the more shrill.
The start of the first of 3 WSBK races in Misano
It is Rea who is in the lead, followed by Rinaldi, Toprak and Redding. Shortly afterwards, the Italian prevailed after almost sending Rea off the track again in Turn 2, just as he did in Estoril. A little later, Rea is the first pursuer of the local hero, followed by Redding, Toprak, Lowes, Sykes, Mahias, Davies, Bautista, van der Mark and Bassani. After 3 rounds, Rea sits on the leader’s neck and Rinaldi will soon be confronted with the first attack of the reigning 6-time world champion, while Redding is still clearly behind Toprak. Behind the Turk is currently Lowes ahead of Sykes, Davies and Mahias. The Kawasaki ace follows the leader from Italy like a shadow, and he looks much stronger in many corners, but has so far refrained from attacking. Behind them, Toprak passed Redding and is now trying to get closer to the leading duo.
For the moment no fight for the lead
While Toprak and Redding are already 2.5 seconds behind, Rinaldi tries to pull away from the front, but Rea cannot be shaken off for the time being. With 15 laps to go, Rea is still close behind the leader and Razgatlioglu was able to clearly break away from Redding, but is still 2 seconds behind P2. As we announced yesterday, the reigning runner-up will only have enough struggle to reach the podium. Rea just got off the track and was overtaken by Toprak shortly afterwards when he was barely able to prevent a fall. Rinaldi is now clearly in the lead and Rea is not far behind Razgatlioglu, while Scott is apparently having trouble getting to the two in front of him.
Garrett Gerloff’s race to catch up
After starting from the pit lane, the Texan has already made up 5 positions. Chaz Davies just crashed with 10 laps to go. Lowes is currently fifth ahead of Sykes, Bautista, Bassani, Locatelli, van der Mark and Mahias. Gerloff is already in the points with P14. After his near-crash, the world championship leader doesn’t seem to risk everything anymore, and he is currently on position 3 behind Toprak, while Rinaldi is already more than 4 seconds ahead of the duo behind him. It looks like a sure first win of the season for the local hero, while his Ducati works team colleague in the world championship on P4 will of course lose more points if he can’t catch up with Rea.
The last 5 laps
Sykes has yet to secure his sixth place as Bautista and Bassani put pressure on the Englishman right behind him. With 3 laps to go, Rinaldi can only beat himself and Toprak is safely on P2 ahead of Rea. Redding has to hope for a mistake by a driver ahead of him if he still wants to be on the podium. Gerloff has already reached P12 after grabbing Haslam and Nozane. In the last lap the positions are fixed and Rinaldi is the first to cross the checkered flag, followed by Razgatlioglu, the world championship leader with now 31 instead of 35 points ahead of the Turks and Redding, who missed the podium. Below is the ranking list with the drivers without championship points in italics. In addition to the fallen Davies, the losers include his compatriot Redding with P4, Sykes, who dropped to 8th place, and Jonas Folger. The German didn’t even make it into the points.

The first interviews after the race
While Scott Redding is only fourth in the pits, a satisfied Johnny Rea states that after his 150th podium, he is happy to be there at all. He was simply lucky, according to his statement, that he did not fall on his violent slide. He and his team will now check the setup for Sunday and tomorrow is a new day on which everything will start all over again. Winner Rinaldi is very happy, his house is only 20 minutes away from the track and to win in front of his home crowd is of course great. He thanked his crew and the fans politely and disappeared waving to his people, who are only half happy after the disappointment of his teammate. Toprak said he didn’t have a good feeling on his Yamaha initially. He will try a different setup with his team in order to try to do even better on Sunday.

The winner’s photo with from left Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx, P2), winner Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Ducati) and third-placed world championship leader Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team) still 31 points ahead of the Turks despite P3 as the closest pursuer, while Redding with P4 lost other important points.

The WorldSSP 600 Race

Unsurprisingly, lightning starter Aegerter took the lead from pole after the start, followed by Cluzel, Odendaal, Gonzalez and Öncü. Davide Pizzoli didn’t finish the first round with a crash on Turn 10. Odendaal is now second when there are still 17 laps left and behind them Cluzel, Gonzales, Bernardi, Öncü, Öttl, Soomer, Caricasulo and Krummi in P10. The next one in the gravel is Shogo Kawasaki. The next with a crash is Massimo Roccoli and currently Gonzalez is on P3 in front of Cluzel. The next retirement hits Chris Bergman, but with a technical problem. A short time later Soomer also fell, and immediately afterwards another Italian, Matteo Pattacca. Only the Estonian was able to continue his race.
A group of four at the top with Aegerter as the leader
Directly behind the Swiss still Odendaal, Gonzalez and Cluzel, while on P5 Bernardi caught up with the leading group again. Behind Öncü, Caricasulo, Öttl, De Rosa, Tuuli and Krummi only in 11th position, but Raffaele De Rosa has just fallen, making the second Swiss back into the top ten. Now Federico Caricasulo is also on the ground, the Italian caught it in turn 3. After a mistake by Gonzalez, Cluzel passed the Spaniard and was slightly behind the leading duo in P3 when the Frenchman was caught shortly afterwards by Bernardi, who is now third.
The last eight laps
Domi Aegerter is still in charge, while Steven Odendaal seems to be having a bit of trouble keeping up with the Swiss. Luca Bernardi has a slight respectful distance and behind him Cluzel and Gonzalez are trying not to lose too much ground. In the meantime, Aegerter has clearly moved ahead and Odendaal has Bernardi on his neck. The gap between Cluzel and Gonzalez and the two in front of them is around a second. Now Bernardi is on P2 when there are still 4 laps to go and the “Domi-Fighter” should hardly be able to take his second victory after Estoril. Öttl has caught Öncü and is now on P6 and behind the Turks Krummi, Tuuli and Filippo Fuligni. The race is over and Aegerter wins for the second time in a row, followed by Bernardi, Odendaal, Cluzel, Gonzalez, Öttl and Krummenacher, who had just caught Öncü. Maria Herrera fell in the last lap after an attack by Marc Alcoba, which the stewards will definitely take a closer look at. Below is the provisional ranking list with the drivers without World Championship points in italics.

The first interviews after the last race of the day
Steven Odendaal is happy with the podium, but of course he would have preferred to have been at the top. But the season is still long, and he remains confident, said the visibly disappointed South African after P3. Luca Bernardi as second was much more satisfied, and he wanted to try to reach another podium on Sunday. He thanked the team, family and everyone who supported him nicely. The winner from Switzerland was of course overjoyed after his start-to-finish victory, and he also thanked him for the progress his team had made after the difficult first races. Aegerter took over the championship lead in front of Odendaal, but with only 3 points ahead and many races still to go it remains of course exciting.

This live blog is closed now, and we will continue with a new one tomorrow.
