Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha) is the man who obviously needs to be beaten after already 3 wins of the season in 2021. The fast man from Nice had already won last year and came second in his MotoGP premiere.

Live blog from Friday – MotoGP in Barcelona

It is almost certain that the current records on the converted course would have to fall this weekend. As the WorldSBK tests showed after the modification of curve 10, an improvement of about half a second per lap can be expected. At least if it stays dry in one of the training sessions or especially in qualifying on Saturday, new record laps can be expected. Even more important than that, however, is who is in the lead in the end, first in qualifying and especially on Sunday in the race. Marc Marquez should be very strong on paper, but the 6-time MotoGP world champion usually looks more like a shadow of himself. At the moment, based on his own statements, there is little to suggest that he will be able to fight for the podium. But you never know with him, and the list of other candidates is at least long enough. Alex Rins will definitely be absent after a broken arm in training on Thursday morning, but Jorge Martin is back after his accident in Portugal.

MotoGP: 1’38.680 Pole & all-time Lap Rec. (Lorenzo/Ducati 2018) / 1’40.021 best Race Lap (Lorenzo/Ducati 2018).
Moto2: 1’43.355 Pole & all-time Lap Record (Marini 2020) / 1’43.544 best Race Lap (S. Lowes 2020).
Moto3: 1’47,762 Pole & all-time Lap Record (Arbolino 2020) / 1’48.702 best Race Lap (Fenati 2020).

Aleix Espargaró (Aprilia Gresini Racing Team) in a duel with Alex Rins (Suzuki Ecstar, right) pursued by Marc Marquez (hidden) and Franco Morbidelli – the man with the number 41 comes from Granollers and therefore from the immediate vicinity of the track.

Aleix Espargaró – the World Cup seventh before the race in his home country on his expectations for the GP of Catalonia:My home track is always a special championship round. This is where my passion for motorcycling was born. I also find it an extremely fascinating track and I can’t wait to tackle it with the Aprilia RS-GP 2021. I had some concerns after what happened in Mugello on Friday and Saturday. My arm wasn’t looking good at first, but I didn’t have any problems in the race. That is reassuring, we are consistently in the group of the best, and hopefully we can keep up. The goal here is another step forward.” (The editorial team: The Catalan had an arm pump operation after Le Mans and it was not clear before the race how well he would be able to cover the distance).

FP1 of MotoGP

With 1’41.357 Fabio Quartararo set his first best time early, which shortly afterwards was undercut by Marc Marquez by a good tenth when the MotoGP riders are on the track. Times keep tumbling when Pol Espargaró is the first to stay below 1’41 and the conditions are ideal when the clock is still 35 minutes. Frankie Morbidelli is also in the mix and just drove a 1’40,402, which is significantly faster than the Repsol Honda local hero from neighboring Granollers before. Aleix is on the Aprilia on P3 behind his brother Pol and in front of Maverick, Johann, Fabio and Miguel. At the moment almost everyone is in the box to discuss their setup and coordinate the first modifications.
The last 20 minutes of the first free practice
Morbido is currently still the fastest and nothing has changed for the first 7. Marc Marquez flew out of the top ten and is currently on P12 behind Mir, Miller, Bagnaia and Nakagami. We just heard an Englishman talking about how Pecco might have won at Mugello had he not crashed. We see the biggest problem in the fact that he lost a lot of points and even P4 like Zarco would have been better than a crash. Directly behind Marquez is his former arch-rival Valentino Rossi, who was significantly better than the Catalan in Mugello, precisely because he reached the goal with P10 and, unlike him, remained seated.
10 minutes until the end of FP1
Interestingly, there haven’t been any further time improvements at the top yet. As is so often the case, the last attacks are ridden for a good time in the last 3 to 4 minutes. Mugello’s best man is out on the track for his final stint. At the Italian GP, Fabio Quartararo literally pulverized the old lap record with his Monster Energy Yamaha. Mugello’s best man is out on the track for his final stint. At the Italian GP, Fabio Quartararo literally pulverized the old lap record with his Monster Energy Yamaha. Exactly this speaks against the fact that Bagnaia would have had a chance against the fast French. In the last two minutes Aleix is again on a red time, but only in the first sector and after that he loses ground on Morbidos previous best time. In the end, however, it is just enough for a new best lap. Time is up and there have been only a few increases compared to the first half. Below the official FP1 ranking as published.

The first free practice of Moto2

At halftime, Raul leads ahead of Adrian Fernandez, Lowes, Bendsneyder, “Di Gia” and Bezzechhi. World Championship leader Gardner is on P4 ahead of Garzo, Bulega and Ramirez. The Australian is currently in the pits. The sky is quite dark, and the rain forecast was around 10 to 20 percent for the whole weekend. At the moment it’s dry and when the clock is just under 20 minutes, most of the drivers are in the pits. During this time, we will of course be busy working on the setup of their bikes. Remy Gardner is now on P3 and displaced Sam Lowes by one position. The two Fernandez are still in front. In contrast to the previous MotoGP, some of the riders in Moto2 are still on a time attack. Augusto Fernandez is still ahead, now ahead of Gardner, Raul Fernandez, Bezzecchi, Lowes and Bendsneyder.
Rain for Sunday
We have just learned that the forecast for Sunday has a rain probability of up to 90 percent. At the moment this applies to everything in the morning, but this may well change. On the other hand, it should stay dry on Saturday. The time for FP2 has now expired and there will be a break until Moto3 and the second free practice session continue. Joe Roberts is in 16th position and Cameron Beaubier is currently only twenty-first. Instead of the official result of FP2, the entry list appears currently from Dorna, the people are definitely not role models when it comes to their work. Now they got it and below the official result of FP2.

FP2 of Moto3

This will start at 1:10 p.m., i.e. 5 minutes before the plan and, as has often been the case, no reason was given. The riders are now on the track and the session lasts 40 minutes, as always, in still dry conditions. Hardly on the track, Deniz Öncü had a violent fall from a highsider and then got up again on his own. It was in Turn 2 and a little later Izdihar is also in the gravel trap in Turn 13. With ten minutes to go, Rodrigo is ahead of Suzuki, Antonelli, Fenati, Nepa, Migno and Toba. McPhee is only on P17 but still provisionally in Q2 with his time from FP1. A final attack on the best of times is expected shortly. Almost 4 minutes before the end, Pedro Acosta sets a new best time. The time has run out, and below the official ranking. The first 13 are provisionally in Q2, plus Filip Salac with his time from FP1.

FP2 of MotoGP – the highlight of Friday

In the first free practice session, the Asparagus brothers, who come from Granollers in the immediate vicinity, were far ahead. Zarco was once again the best Ducati and all manufacturers in the top ten. The 45 minutes have now begun, and the first drivers are taking to the track. Countless drivers are shown on the monitor with their split times in red, and other drivers are constantly taking turns at the top. On Turn 4, Luca Marini is the first to have a crash, but he looks unhurt and is back on his bike. It was more of a ride into the gravel bed followed by falling over from the Italian. In between, Marc Marquez was ahead of Maverick and Pol, but then Fabio Quartararo is the fastest. After his victory in Mugello a week ago and here last year, the young Frenchman is of course a top favorite.
After the first quarter of an hour
Joan Mir is currently ahead of Zarco, Oliveira and Aleix on P6, he is Suzuki’s only hope because of Alex Rins’ armbreak this weekend because Guintoli was not called up as a replacement. Quartararo sits relaxed in his box and discusses his impressions of the track with his crew. Brand colleague Morbido was a bit faster than the Yamaha works rider earlier. The Italian rode below 1:40 for the first time and is still on the track, while Oliveira makes a detour in the converted curve 10 into the gravel bed, but without falling. With 20 minutes left on the clock, Marc Marquez is ahead of Maverick, Pol and Mir on P3. His constant understatement before the weekend, as last shown again at the press conference on Thursday evening, is no longer buying from him. Without his fall, he had been absolutely with the people in Mugello.
The last 15 minutes of the second free practice
Bagnaia and Miller are currently not in the top ten, as is Nakagami. But the hunt for a fast lap is only expected in the last few minutes. In FP1, almost everyone did without it. With nine minutes to go, the Australian is the first to set a red time, but only in the first sector and then gray again. Miller just pitted to discuss the latest changes to his bike with his crew before the final stint. Now most of them are leaving the pits and some are already on the track before the hunt for a top ten time for everyone to provisionally qualify for Q2. Oliveira is the first on P3 with a clear improvement, followed by Viñales, who moved up from 6th to second. With just under two minutes to go, Binder is ahead with a new personal best. The time is up and after several of them improved, Zarco is the fastest in the end, ahead of Morbidelli and Quartararo. Bastianini is the positive surprise as a rookie in the top ten and Pol Espargaró is the only Honda behind the Italian and Aleix in P9. The drivers from P11 in italics are not directly in Q2, unless the times can be improved on Saturday morning.

Johann Zarco (Pramac Ducati) with Quartararo and Mir at the press conference – the World Cup runner-up was the fastest man on Friday at the Circuito de Catalunya.

FP2 of Moto2

The riders are out after a few surprises in MotoGP before that. Among other things, Joan Mir on P16 is one of the disappointments, while Luca Marini, as a rookie behind Nakagami and Petrux, just missed the top ten with 13th place. After almost 10 minutes, a piece of the casing almost fell off Marco Bezzecchi’s bike, but the Italian noticed it and held the part and just pitted his Kalex. Augusto Fernandez just crashed, but luckily the Spaniard, who is currently on P3, did not injure himself. Next up is Joe Roberts, who landed in the gravel trap of Turn 2, but also got up immediately and was uninjured.
The second half of the last free practice session on Friday
Somkiat Chantra fell in Turn 7 without hurting himself either. The world championship leader is currently in the lead and behind Gardner are Lowes, Adrian Fernandez, Vierge, Raul Fernandez, Bezzecchi and Di Giannantonio. Schrötter is on P8 and Dixon is tenth. Roberts and Beaubier are in the top fifteen, but currently not provisionally qualified for Q2. Barry Baltus crashed on Turn 4, for whom FP2 is almost over 10 minutes before the end. The time has expired and the following is the ranking list with the drivers in italics who are currently not qualified for Q2.
