Live blog for the first day of the Italian GP in Mugello
Before we started focusing on WorldSBK with our live blog on Saturday, it was clear early on that Friday would belong to the prototypes. The first of 5 calendar overlaps between the FIM and Dorna constructs forced us to do so, because in the first 3 cases everything happened almost simultaneously. While the first two free practice sessions in the near-series World Championship are only used to prepare for Superpole on Saturday, preliminary decisions can already be made in MotoGP in FP1 and FP2. The best time of the first three free practice sessions for direct entry into Q2 counts here. Due to the uncertain weather forecast, this can therefore mean that the drivers in FP3 on Saturday morning no longer manage to improve their best lap compared to Friday. Below are the reference lap times of the 3 different classes.
MotoGP: 1’45.519 Pole & all-time Lap Rec. (M. Marquez/Honda 2019) / 1’47.639 best Race Lap (Marquez/Honda 2013).
Moto2: 1’51.129 Pole & all-time Lap Record (Schrötter 2019) / 1’51.881best Race Lap (A. Marquez 2019).
Moto3: 1’56.407 Pole & all-time Lap Record (Arbolino 2019) / 1’56.628 best Race Lap (Di Gannantonio 2018).
The longest straight of the season
Of the routes that are currently still in the MotoGP and WorldSBK calendars, even if some of them without an appointment for this season, Mugello has the longest straight except Austin in Texas. At the track in the USA, however, hardly anyone currently believes in a new date instead of the one for the 3rd round of the World Cup in April. The start-finish straight of the course, which is very scenic in the Apennines, is not a real straight at all, as Marc Marquez had to painfully discover in his 2013 high-speed crash in Mugello. Because it has a kink in the second half, which is similar to “Turn 2” at Spielberg, but is driven at full throttle as in Austria, this is what is known as a curve in Italy, in contrast to the Red Bull Ring. The bend in the racetrack in Styria was definitely only named as curve 2 so that it was enough for at least the number 10.

FP1 of MotoGP
The drivers are on the track, and it is dry. The substitute driver for Jorge Martin at Pramac Ducat, Michele Pirro is also on the track. As a Ducati test and reserve driver, he is the right man at Johann Zarco’s side, also because Tito Rabat is driving his second WorldSBK lap as a rookie this weekend. With 1’47.945 he holds the first best time of the day, as a Ducati test driver he has of course been driving a lot in Mugello lately. It’s Fabio Quartararo, who drives a 1’47.566 and is the first to make it under the previous record of Pirro. Shortly afterwards, Maverick Viñales is a tenth faster. Third best ahead of Pirro at this time is Takaaki Nakagami on the best Honda.
After the first 20 minutes
Behind Pirro at this point are Bagnaia, Binder, Pol Espargaró Oliveira, Aleix Espargaró, Marc Marquez, Miller and Zarco. With 1’48.008, Johann Zarco just set the fifth-best time and is thus in the provisional top ten. Maverick has now driven a 1’47.130 and is clearly in the lead. It could be important to set a good time on Friday and stay within the first ten, as there is a low probability of 20 percent rain on Saturday. In the evening the forecast is even 90% for then. When the clock is still a little over 12 minutes, Zarco is on P2.
The last 10 minutes
Bagnaia is now fourth ahead of Oliveira and Nakagami. Behind the two Suzuki drivers Mir and Rins. With his time from the first half of FP1, Quartararo is still on P3 behind his teammate and Zarco. Marc Marquez in P14 and Morbido in P12, Rossi is currently only seventeenth. The second named has now set the second-best time and Morbidelli is currently the best Italian behind a Spaniard with Viñales and Rins, followed by the two Frenchmen. Alex Rins just set a new best time, but Maverick was also briefly on red, but lost time in the second sector, which puts his compatriot on the Suzuki in front. Now Viñales is back in front and the time is running out. Below is the ranking list with the drivers in italics who are not directly qualified for Q2.

FP1 of Moto2
After the first quarter of an hour, Bezzecchi leads in front of Lowes, Raul Fernandez, Schrötter and Joe Roberts. With 15 minutes left on the clock, “Di Gia” took second place behind his compatriot Bezzecchi. Behind them is now Raul Fernandez, ahead of Lowes, Augusto Fernandez, Vierge, Schrötter and Roberts. Sam Lowes just set a new best time of the day with 1’52.295, while his compatriot Jake Dixon is only on P24. Remy Gardner has appeared rather modest as the world championship leader with P10. At P12, 10 minutes before the end, Tom Lüthi is relatively far ahead. With a new best time of 1’51.984, Gardner is now the world championship leader when there are still 7 minutes on the clock. Many drivers are fast in the last few minutes, especially in the first 2 sectors, but after that the times on the monitor usually turn grey, which does not mean a personal or absolute increase. In literally the last minute, Joe Roberts set a new personal best and here the ranking of FP1 with the drivers in italics who are not directly qualified for Q2.

FP2 of Moto3
The drivers are on the track and half an hour before the end the Japanese-Italian Tatsuki Suzuki is leading. He speaks very good Italian and has been stationed there for several years. Behind Binder, Rodrigo, Garcia, Nepa, Migno, McPhee and Foggia. Local hero Migno just set a new best time of 1’57.809. While his compatriot and idol Toprak set the best time in the WSBK in FP1 (see our report on this page) Deniz Öncü is currently only P13. Jason Dupasquier 3 positions behind and Max Kofler is second to last when the clock is just over 20 minutes. World Championship leader Pedro Acosta is currently only in P15, while his team-mate Jaume Masia just set a new personal best. World Championship leader Pedro Acosta is now the one with the first fall ever that day, a quarter of an hour before the end of turn 15, the last before the start-finish.
The last 10 minutes
The only 16-year-old crash pilot is back in the pits with a dusty leather suit and reports about his crash. He still has time to stay in the top 14 in order to be provisionally in Q2. He’s not sure about P7 yet because a lot of drivers often reach their best time of the day in the last 4 to 5 minutes. In the last 3 minutes the hunt for the provisional best time began with Darryn Binder as the first in front of Fenati, McPhee, Öncü and Suzuki. A little later, the Scot drives the second-best time. Acosta was thrown out of the top 14 because his bike was too destroyed to still be on the time hunt. Rossi, Tatay, Nepa and the Swiss Dupasquier made it into the top 14 and are provisionally in Q2 for Saturday. The time is up and here the official result.

FP2 of MotoGP
The drivers take to the track and in FP1 no Honda was represented in the top 10, which means that their drivers in particular are now under pressure. Compared to lap 4 in Jerez, Marc Marquez is no longer on the strategy of only driving a few laps to protect himself. Allegedly he has problems with his shoulder and not just his right arm. But the only thing that matters here is how fast he can be because, according to the Medical Commission, he is fit. Five minutes after the start of the second free practice session, he follows Pecco Bagnaia, who has just noticed this and passed the 6-time MotoGP world champion. At the front of this pack of drivers is Miller currently ahead of Alex Marquez. After the first quarter of an hour, Oliveira is ahead, but his time is just below Viñales’ best in the morning. It is to be expected that some drivers will drive significantly faster, especially in the last 5 minutes of FP2. Quartararo has a relaxed drink from his Monster Energy bottle in his box, the Frenchman looks very confident and is currently on P3.
The second half of FP2
Pit Beirer was still confident in the interview during FP2 when he was asked about the performance of the KTM. But since the man from Friedrichshafen publicly announced that the season for the oranges was only beginning in Jerez, many people have struggled to take the man seriously. Only after FP2 do we know whether KTM has really taken a step as he claimed. When the last quarter of an hour began, only a few had a significantly better time than in FP1. Therefore, even Morbido, who is currently only in P14, is provisionally qualified for Q2 at this point in time. Of course, the hunt for a new personal best will begin shortly. Because in FP2 all Moto3 pilots were faster than in the first free practice, the decisive phase of FP2 of MotoGP now begins in the last 8 minutes. The first on red this time is Miller, who in the end with 1’46.588 but only managed the third-best time behind Oliveira and Bagnaia. One after the other, Mir, Quartararo and his teammate failed to set a new personal best after two red sectors. Now the last 2 minutes have begun and Rins sets a new best time, then Binder follows just behind and a little later Quartararo has P2, but still one lap. The FP2 is over now. In the combined ranking, Vinales is in the top ten and Zarco just barely made it. But he may still have a chance to qualify directly for Q2 on Saturday morning in FP3. Especially the good time in FP1 in Vinales as only 17th in the afternoon should give courage to the drivers who are listed in italics and not provisionally directly in Q2.

FP2 of Moto2
After numerous surprises in MotoGP FP2, the last free practice session of the day in the middle category follows. Shortly before half-time, Raul Fernandez leads in front of Lowes, Navarro, Bezzecchi, Gardner, “Di Gia” and Joe Roberts, who has just crashed into Turn 5. Fortunately, the US boy was unharmed. Tom Lüthi is also on the ground a little later, the Swiss only seems to be a shadow of himself. With Schrötter, Syhrin and Canet, three of the Moto2 drivers are currently playing the Vinales and are well behind the top ten, but are currently still qualified for Q2 due to their time in the morning. In the last few minutes, drivers like Jake Dixon have to improve to P16 in order to make it directly into Q2, at least temporarily. Little has changed in the front, but Lowes has just set a new personal best and is now ahead of Raul Fernandez at the top. Shortly before the end, Schrötter was also in the top ten for a time and his team-mate and rookie Arbolino is even on P6. On Turn 9, Chantra also fell, but can walk and seems unharmed. Time is up and some are on their final lap. Canet, Augusto Fernandez, Chantra and Garzo have provisionally made it into Q2 in addition to the first 10.

Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello
With a length of 5,245 kilometres, the route is one of the longest on the MotoGP calendar. Only Silverstone, Sepang, Austin, Brno and Losail are longer than Mugello. With 6 left and 9 right turns and a width of 14 meters, the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello is a very fast racetrack. Due to the 1.141 km long start-finish straight, impressive top speeds are measured in MotoGP. The speed record set by Andrea Dovizioso with his factory Ducati in 2019 is a massive 356.7 km / h. The absolute lap record is held by Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda) and 1: 45.519 minutes as of 2019.
